Taking Internet Connectivity Outdoors for the Ultimate Fan Experience

Taking Internet Connectivity Outdoors for the Ultimate Fan Experience

It’s September and for music fans in and around Atlanta that means only one thing – Music Midtown. Music festivals have always been big-ticket events for the music industry and fans, alike. These large-scale events provide fans the opportunity to see a variety of the hottest acts perform in one arena, and provide the cities that host them with flocks of visiting fans contributing to economic growth. Music Midtown, established in 1994, took a hiatus in the mid 2000s, and made a powerful comeback in 2011 and continues gaining traction year after year. At its peak, the annual outdoor event now expects 160,000 attendees over the course of the two days, and while excitement is certainly in the air one inevitable requirement remains – wireless Internet access for production, artists and fans.

Often overlooked, network access at music festivals, particularly outdoor festivals is critical. With thousands of people in attendance, there’s no room for Internet downtime and unlike film and TV productions, there’s no room for rescheduling or second-takes. In recent years, all of the top music festivals, including Coachella and Bonnaroo, have faced challenges with becoming a part of the digital age as fans now expect reliable connectivity wherever they go. Additionally, production operation teams need network access to run behind-the-scenes logistics at the festival, including: security communication, live media updates, outdoor ticketing, merchandise, ATMs and more. Festivals like Music Midtown also need high-speed Internet and enough bandwidth to satisfy the data needs of a massive crowd. Today, attendees are spending anywhere from $100 to over $800 for passes and they want to be able to share their experiences through tweets, Instagram pictures, texts, phone calls and more - in real time.  And if fans aren’t happy, they’ll be sure to tweet about it later. So how does LiveNation prepare to make sure Music Midtown’s Internet connection is up and running without a hitch? By enlisting the flexible wireless capabilities and quick installation provided by One Ring Networks (click here to download a case study).

Construction of main stage leading up to Music Midtown 2014

For the 4th year in a row One Ring Networks has partnered with LiveNation to provide temporary WiFi service for Music Midtown’s urban outdoor space. One Ring Networks’ scalable bandwidth and customized broadband solutions are perfect for delivering the connectivity needed for outdoor events such as these, and in days rather than weeks or months, allowing LiveNation to focus on other logistics of the festival.  As we count down to festival time, when Piedmont Park will transform from a leisurely weekend hotspot into a sea of 100,000 plus excited music fans, three main stages and a lineup full of A-list entertainment, One Ring Networks is prepping for the 9 Day installation for the temporary event. Over the course of the two-day festival, One Ring Networks will be providing diverse 300Mbps data circuits into the park, data circuits for gates, production and artists as well as food and beverage.  Voice service and hosted PBX is also supplied throughout the campus , ensuring an excellent digital experience for all Music Midtown attendees – from fans to production crews.

Music Midtown 2014 is taking place Friday, Sept. 19 – Saturday, Sept. 20 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Attendees will experience a variety of performances from headliners including Eminem, Jack White, Zac Brown Band, John Mayer, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Run DMC, Gregg Allman and more. With a lineup like this, who wouldn’t want to tweet or share photos on Instagram?
